When the Republicans on the Anne Arundel County Council vote in Michael Peroutka in as the chairman, we have to ask: What were they thinking?
They know Peroutka is an ardent supporter of the Alabama U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore, an accused child molester, racist and bigot. Peroutka was likely behind the fundraiser held for Moore in Anne Arundel County in September. Published pictures showing Anne Arundel county politicians — County Executive Steve Schuh, U.S. Rep. Andy Harris and county Circuit Court Judge Mark W. Crooks — smiling besides Moore are, in a word, disturbing. What were they thinking?
Moore, apart from being the subject of multiple allegations of pedophilia, has also stated that he agrees with Russian President Vladimir Putin that America is the focus of evil in the world. Moore has said the last time America was great was during the time of slavery. Despite all this, Peroutka’s stubborn support for Moore endures.
Councilman Peroutka is a lightning rod for public criticism and his views don’t represent most county voters. Many of us are ashamed he is on our County Council. These concerns have been reported in The Capital many times. What were they thinking when electing him to lead the council?
Peroutka believes public education is the 10th plank of the Communist Manifesto and an instrument of tyranny. The council is the final fiscal authority of a county in which the largest portion of the budget goes to education. Why on Earth would the council elect as chairman someone who does not believe in public education?
Does any of this make sense? What were they thinking? Obviously, they were not thinking of the voters and students of Anne Arundel County.
