Immediate Action Required!
Legislative deadline just days away
The end of the 2019 Maryland General Assembly Session is just days away, and the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee has still not voted on HB 307, the bill to create the Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
The bill passed the House Judiciary Committee by a vote of 21-0, and then passed the full House of Delegates by a vote of 136-0.
On March 26 the bill was heard by the MD Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee and there was no opposition.
However, despite repeated overwhelming endorsements, the bill has not yet been voted on by the Senate committee!
Time is Running Out!!
HB 307 MUST be voted on by the MD Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee before it can be brought to the Senate floor for a vote.
If it does not receive a vote by the full Senate before the end of the session, the bill will die!
Please Act Now!!
CONTACT Committee Chairman, Senator Bobby Zirkin, and urge him to bring this bill to a vote so that the Senate can act on this important measure before it’s too late!
The session ends Monday, April 8!
You can find a list of all Senate Judiciary Proceedings Committee members (along with email lnks) here:
Write to Chairman Zirkin and your Senator TODAY and urge them to bring this important legislation to a vote at once!
Remind them Maryland has an opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to justice by confronting the history of racial terror in our state. Only by telling the truth can we achieve reconciliation.
As Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative wrote in his eloquent letter of support for HB 307, to heal the trauma inflicted by our history of racial injustice,
“… we must truthfully confront the violence and the silence surrounding the legacies of this violence. I encourage you to pass House Bill 307 so that communities in Maryland can step further down the path towards healing.”
This issue is too important to ignore
Please take a few moments RIGHT NOW to contact Senator Zirkin and other members of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee and urge them to VOTE FOR HB 307 TODAY!
Thank you so much for your help.
