Save Our Schools! – Step 1

January 11 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Come tell the Board of Education what to add to our Superintendent’s proposed budget!

Here is some background: The squeeze on our public schools started during the great recession. Our schools have never fully recovered. As a result, class sizes are large, many schools are overcrowded, most schools are understaffed, teachers are overworked/underpaid and many are leaving AACPS in droves. As a result, many of our neediest and most marginalized CHILDREN are paying the price, not getting the support and help they need. Come advocate for kids, teachers, and our schools and OUR COMMUNITY.

An overview of the school budget can be found here: https://www.aacps.org/Page/3666

While there are many great things in this proposed budget, there are some giant needs missing. Please share your concerns in the “discussion” for this event. Here are some of my concerns:

1. Staffing.
While 136 new teaching positions might sounds like a substantial number, AACPS has over 120 schools. Slightly more than 1 new teacher per school will scarcely make a dent in our class size issue.

2. Social Services.
5.4 new school counselors, 2 school psychologists, 2 new social workers, and 1 pupil personnel worker will still leave far too many students without the access to social services that many of students desperately need. Our social services staff has largely been reduced to addressing emergency situations and has insufficient manpower to address school social issues proactively. This increase is only 1 new staff member for roughly every EIGHT THOUSAND children!!!

3. Teacher salaries.
While 1 salary step and a cost of living increase is an excellent proposal, this budget does nothing to correct the pay inequity caused by the pay freezes of the recession. Veteran teachers are still anywhere from $6,000-$12,000 behind and as a result they are leaving the county in droves. Pay in neighboring counties has recovered from the recession and as a result, AACPS teachers can earn 10-25K more in every neighboring county on this side of the Chesapeake Bay.

WHAT ELSE MATTERS TO YOU? Share it here and tell the Board of Education so we can SAVE OUR SCHOOLS!
