Legislation

As the Maryland General Assembly prepares for session every year, WISE Huddles choose the legislation that we will be advocating for with our representatives.  The Huddles educate WISE’s general membership about the issues, and provides the membership ways to support the Huddles. You can read our 2019 Legislative Priorities Brochure for details on the legislation we will be advocating for this year. If you would like to learn how to track bills, you can view our tutorial.

WISE has also developed a detailed Legislative Guide to assist WISE members and the public in understanding when, where, and how to insert ourselves in the legislative process in order to support new or existing legislation or prevent passage of legislation we do not support. Read this useful tool to become an expert on the legislative process and advocating for legislation.

During the 2018 Legislative Session, WISE helped to pass 11 pieces of priority legislation, including a ban on conversion therapy for minors, the creation of a grant program focused on ending youth homelessness, protections for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. You can view previous legislation WISE has supported and the voting scorecards of our District 33 legislators on these bills in our 2018 Legislative Scorecard and the 2017 Legislative Scorecard.

WISE has joined the Maryland Legislative Coalition to help support legislation that aligns with our mission and to partner with other organizations and legislators to ensure bills that address the needs of our communities are passed. Their website details their 2019 Legislative Agenda along with helpful information on finding your legislator and submitting testimony on a bill.
