The Political Advocacy and Accountability Huddle supports the election of candidates with values important to WISE, works with them to implement their commitments through policies, legislation and budget, and holds them accountable for doing so. It also tracks campaign financing, promotes issues-based inputs into the budget and legislative processes and works in collaboration with others to reduce the role of money in politics. A sub-group on legislative affairs organizes WISE’s efforts around priority legislation around a range of issues each session.
In January 2019, the WISE Steering Committee met with Anne Arundel County Executive Pittman to discuss our suggestions for changes to the county budget. The final briefs on each budget topic we discussed are below, please review them to see what issues WISE will be advocating for in our community this year.
On 25 January, a selection of Huddle facilitators had an initial meeting with the new County Executive, Steuart Pittman, and his staff. In preparation for the meeting a series of briefs, outlining WISE’s work in each area, as well as suggestions for the new administration of things that could be achieved, both with budget administration and without, were drawn up and can be read below. These were given to the new administration who noted that they were grateful to WISE for their County-wide efforts and lamented not having more time for the initial meeting. WISE looks forward to working to support the new administration around these priorities, flagging issues which we believe should be seen as more of a priority and in holding them accountable for their commitments and actions.
