Racial Justice

The Racial Justice Huddle recognizes that systemic racism still exists in every aspect of American society and that white supremacy is infused into the foundation of this country. Racism is perpetuated through white privilege, the white standard, and unequal treatment of people of color in the educational, criminal justice, and other core institutions.  Our mission is to educate ourselves, ask ourselves the hard questions about our history and current society, and to act to eradicate racism and to come together to create a more just future for all. 2020 Priority Legislation for Racial Justice Huddle

  1. Blueprint for Maryland’s Future – The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future not only raises achievement for every student, but also eliminates achievement and opportunity gaps that continue to persist in Maryland. According to the Maryland Alliance for Racial Equity in Education (MAREE) and Strong Schools Maryland:
    • Policy & Funding: Maryland’s current system is not equitable in policy, opportunity, or funding. In fact, 53% of black students attend substantially underfunded schools compared to 8% of white students. In addition, white students are at least twice as likely to participate in dual enrollment programs than their nonwhite counterparts.
    • Programs: Research shows pre-k is beneficial for all, but has greatest impact on students from low-income backgrounds. MAREE has proposed several recommendations critical to the implementations of the Blueprint. To find out more, visit https://www.strongschoolsmaryland.org. 2. Hate Crimes (HB005) – Use of an item or symbol with the intent to threaten or intimidate: In light of the recent uptick in hate crimes in the state, this legislation prohibits a person from placing or inscribing an item or symbol, including an actual noose and swastika, on public or private property without the express consent of the owner, with the intent to threaten or intimidate any person or group of people. Jail time and fines apply to violations of this act.
  3. Pre-Release Facility Services for Women – The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services operates no dedicated lower-security facility for women preparing to return to the community from prison, there are 9 facilities for men. This legislation requires the Commissioner of Corrections to operate a pre-release unit for women that offers reentry services and programming to help women prepare to reintegrate and provide the best chance at success. To find out more, visit: https://www.out4justice.org/legislative-advocacy and https://www.ma4jr.org/initiatives-2020/
